Scrambles are our jam! There’s something special about whipping up eggs for my kids in the morning. Perhaps it’s the love and care that went into their meal or the knowledge that they’re starting the day with a substantial source of protein in their bellies. Either way, breakfast scrambles are a fast and protein packed breakfast that my entire family loves.
One of the benefits of making breakfast scrambles for kids is the versatility – we’re leaving no picky eater behind with these breakfast scrambles. With literally any combination of flavors and ways to enjoy them, cooking up a quick, protein filled breakfast for the kids doesn’t have to take all morning. Here are some tips.
Basic Egg Scramble Recipe
Get started with a simple egg scramble recipe that will serve as the base for your breakfast scramble creations. For my family, I typically start with 6 eggs, 1/3 cup of milk (whatever I have on-hand), and salt and pepper to taste. I whisk all the ingredients together until well combined.
This mixture is easily divided to create customized breakfast scrambles for each of the kids, if necessary.
Cook in a non-stick frying pan until done, but before you do that, here are a few ideas to flavors your basic scramble.
Adding Flavor
Now get ready to add some of your kids’ favorite flavors. Almost every kid I know loves cheese and mixing up the variations is a great way to do this. From mild cheddar to pepper jack or Swiss, cheese variations will offer new taste to your breakfast scramble.
Flavor combinations like pineapple and ham or pre-made salsa with avocado on top make for a simple and delicious breakfast scramble. For the adventurous eaters, use spices to kick up the flavorings. Spices like garlic and onion, chili powder or seasoning salts will take a routine egg scramble to new heights.
Lunch meats are a great addition to breakfast scrambles, too! Slice them lengthwise and add to the egg mixture or fry whole as an addition to an egg scramble sandwich. This is the easiest addition since I always seem to have ham or turkey lunch meat in the fridge. You can even throw in leftover chicken, taco meat or sausages for added flavor boost.
Last but not least, breakfast scrambles are a great way to add in extra vegetable servings into your kids’ diets. Try sautéing asparagus or add grape tomatoes to their morning scramble. Mushrooms, zucchini and sweet potatoes are also delicious partners with eggs.
Breads, Etc
Sure, serving a breakfast scramble in a bowl is fine… but wouldn’t it be fun to serve the kids’ breakfast tacos or pizza? When eggs sound boring, try serving up their egg scrambles in a new way. Pita pockets, hot dog buns and tortillas all offer the opportunity to serve a creative and nutritious breakfast that’s still easy and fast.
And there you have it, mamas. Endless ways to make eggtastic scrambles every day of the week.
